Boxers are muscular and strong dogs that have a square bulldog-type muzzle that actually characterize the breed. They have an energetic and elastic gait animals with a short coat and therefore easy to groom. The usual colors of the breed are fawn and brindle; these colors are acceptable by the standard. Early predecessors of Boxers, favored by royalties and elite personalities, exhibited their strength and agility. Their uses were for bull-, boar- and bear-hunting due to their endurance and tenacious grip. Later they became working-class dogs and used in cattle driving.
In the 1860, the foundation of the German Boxer Club began. In 1895, it was officially recognized, and then it drafted the breed standard. Pictures of those days show that early Boxers were white in color, but in 1925, the confirmation project excluded the white species.
At the beginning of the 20th century, the first Boxer was brought to the USA, and in 1915, the first Boxer Champion was registered at the American Kennel Club. In 1949, the breed made a real splash, and a 2-year-old Boxer, named Bang Away, started his six-year series of dog show victories.
Boxers have a distinctively strong body build with powerful neck, straight front legs, deep and roomy chest and dark eyes. Their upper jaw is shorter than the lower one, and this adds a tough streak to their general appearance. The movement of muscles and proud stance give the dog a highly noble and statuesque look.
