Boxer belongs to the Mastiff Dogs, also called the Molosser Dogs. Small or Brabanter Bullenbeisser is considered to be the progenitor of the Boxer dog. It was strong, agile and very brave dog with brindle colour of the body without any white spots. Its shorter upper jaw allowed the dog to breathe even getting its teeth into the enemy, that maked this breed indispensable in hunting. Their task was to attack the prey from the ambush and keep it until the hunter comes up and kills it. However, when the fire-arms emerged, there were no more need in these dogs. The only thing that saved this breed from vanishing was the necessity of butchers and traiders to control their cattle herds and they needed brave and strong dogs of the kind.
This breed had been crossed with others and up to the 18th century the sole type of Bullenbeisser dog was lost. The name "Boxer" appears first in 60-70s years of the 19th century. Three friends Robert, Helner and Kenig were engaged in pure Boxer breeding. They started developing typical features (standards) of breeds, establishing clubs, arranging exhibitions and rearing pure breeds, historically developed in Germany. In 1895 they carried out the first Boxer exhibition in Munich, which involved 50 dogs.
